12:37:48 PM :: Building list of machines to process Interestingly, also - if I set my proxy to DIRECT STORAGE access and not AUTOMATIC the job fails. Why does this create a vmware snapshot as well if I'm going straight to storage? So, after fixing MPIO, it appears I can do a backup on my test lun, however it seems to have trouble expiring the snapshot on the compellent. Other than that they were all different types of servers with a far range of different hardware configurations (CPU, RAM, etc).

The only correlation that I had for why these VMs would fail to use SAN initially and do their first backup via network was that they were large VMs, with 10s of TB of storage on them. I'm thinking that you might have the "failover to using network" unchecked or that you VEEAM system can't talk directly to the vCenter servers to do network backups possibly.

Once the initial backup was taken by network it would use SAN access on future backups. There is a part of that area that has a "Failover to network mode if primary mode fails" at the bottom and you might not have that checked.įor us some VMs on their initial backup would fail to backup via the direct connection to the SAN and thus would fail over to using the network connection. and you should have Transport Mode setup for Direct Storage Access. If you right click on one of the proxies on the right and choose Properties the first part of the config should have an option for Transport Mode. In the Backup Infrastructure tab of VEEAM there are Backup Proxies. Probably just like you do but we don't use the plugin from Dell, but let the VEEAM system talk to the vCenter server to do the snapshots of the VMs, and then use the SAN connection over the fiber to pull the data. Instead our physical VEEAM server has Fiber cards that are connected to the fabric switches that our Compellents are connected and are zoned to see the storages on those switches and we setup access in the Dell Storage Manager for those storages right along side our ESX servers. Have a SC8000 and SC5020 Compellents and we don't have our storage setup in the Storage Infrastructure part of VEEAM. What was visible in yours when this happens?

How did you set it up? On the Dell page there is this link to the PDF as it should be 12:26:00 PM :: Failed to create processing task for VM VMNAME Error: Cannot find suitable proxy for retrieving data from storage snapshot, and the option to failover to backup from VM snapshot is disabled

"One of the features that is enabled as part of the Veeam Universal Storage API and the storage integration is the ability to use the Dell EMC SC series snapshot engine, this allows us to take an orchestrated application consistent storage snapshot which is stored on the storage system for a retention period. In addition to these, there is a plugin written by Dell that allows Backups as Storage only snapshots and you've mentioned that these do work. These allow Backup from storage snapshot. Anyone experienced similar/have a working instance of this?Īccording to the official documentation the storages supported from Dell are Dell EMC VNX, VNXe and Unity. Error I receive upon attempting to back up direct from storage: 12:26:00 PM :: Failed to create processing task for VM VMNAME Error: Cannot find suitable proxy for retrieving data from storage snapshot, and the option to failover to backup from VM snapshot is disabledĬan't figure out why this fails.I can see all my RDMs, VMFS volumes and their snapshots under Storage Infrastructure.I am specifying the proxy as my local veeam server, (which is also the repository) and has direct mappings to the storage through a brocade fiber channel switch.Backups from storage snapshots is enabled.I'm also able to snapshot the storage through veeam jobs.īut I cannot backup FROM storage to my veeam repository. I am able to add the storage infrastructure no problem. Have Fiber Mappings from my storage - SVC2020s to my veeam server. Veeam support actually wasn't particularly helpful with this - they told me my configuration looks good, and suggested I contact Dell - who are equally clueless.
